Terminology Assistant (Recirculation) G5

Depending on professional background, experience and family situation, a competitive compensation and benefits package will be offered. The successful applicant will be offered a fixed-term appointment of one year limited to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). This appointment and Any subsequent extension(s) are subject to terms of the Tribunal’s mandate and/or the availability of the funds. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon is an international inter-governmental organization with its own independent legal identity and not a UN organization. However, STL follows the UN common system for benefits and entitlements to its staff members. UN staff members may also serve on loan from their parent department/office, if selected. Appointment against this post is on a local basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Terminology Assistant contributes to and assists in maintaining the Section’s terminology database and electronic translation memory. The incumbent will be expected to perform the following duties: extract draft lists of specific terms from authoritative documents in various languages; carry out documentary and linguistic research to identify appropriate terminology; meticulously compile entries in the terminology database; produce glossaries; assist in ad hoc terminological research; undertake the alignment of multilingual versions of documents; participate in the testing and installation of computer-assisted terminology software and related tools; assist in referencing work and in compiling materials for interpreters; and perform other ad hoc duties, as requested by the Chief of the Section.

COMPETENCIES: • Professionalism: Ability to perform relevant terminological and documentary research, to update a terminology bank meticulously, create glossaries, retrieve material rapidly and work independently • Client orientation: Ability to identify clients’ needs, to seek appropriate solutions and to establish and maintain productive partnerships with clients • Teamwork: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity • Technological awareness: Proficiency in using information technology, e.g. search engines, document and terminology management databases, MS Office applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: High-school diploma or equivalent and demonstrated ability to use computer technology • Work Experience: At least five years of related experience in language services • Languages: Arabic, English and French are the official languages of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. For this post, mastery of written Arabic, English and French is required • Other: Applicants may be required to sit a special proficiency test.
