Responsibilities: The University of Ottawa Library seeks an energetic, innovative and service-oriented individual with good technical and communication skills to fill the position of Emerging Technologies Librarian at the University of Ottawa Library. The successful candidate will be a creative individual who works well with colleagues in a challenging and changing environment.

Description: Reporting to the Head, Library Systems Division, the incumbent is responsible for the research, analysis and testing of existing and new technologies and their impact on the Library; supports public services staff in the search for and adaptation of new tools to respond to the needs of clients and enhance services; participates in or leads projects to implement and adopt new technology while streamlining current technology; provides technical expertise to develop and support library systems; facilitates the support of resources; provides reference and research assistance. The incumbent participates, as a team member, in the planning, development and implementation of the Library’s current and future services, systems and technical infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution;
2. Four (4) years of professional experience or fewer, depending on relevance of the experience;
3. Sound knowledge of client needs and use of print and electronic resources;
4. Keen interest in current and emerging trends and technologies in academic libraries, web and collaborative tools, learning technologies, social software, information management and retrieval systems, information theory and related areas of librarianship, knowledge management;
5. Demonstrated working knowledge of information technology principles and emerging web/mobile technologies, including standards and security issues.
6. Knowledge of digital initiatives and emerging web and mobile technologies;
7. Demonstrated practical experience with open source SQL databases, web programming (JAVA/JSP, XHTML, XSLT and PHP) in Unix and Windows environments.
8. Knowledge of library metadata, including harvesting and repurposing of existing data.
9. Awareness of web accessibility and usability standards.
10. Technologically competent with creative problem solving skills, attentive to detail, curious, flexible, strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently;
11. A proven service orientation; demonstrated leadership skills and a willingness to collaborate and share expertise, ability to work in teams and negotiate solutions with diverse groups;
12. Knowledge of project management tools and demonstrated ability to manage time and set priorities, manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and work under pressure;
13. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;
14. Bilingual (English and French) written and spoken; demonstrated ability to make presentations and train in both official languages.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This position is part of the Bargaining Unit (Faculty, Librarians, Counsellors, Language teachers).
