Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the above post based in the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham. The teaching element of this post will support the expansion of the School's successful undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. A commitment to the development of high quality interdisciplinary research and teaching programmes focusing on financial economics and contemporary China is essential. Other duties include administrative tasks and contributing to the developmental activities of the School within the wider University community, especially with our campuses in China and Malaysia, including the possibility of domestic and overseas travel.

The School of Contemporary Chinese Studies (SCCS) was established in January 2007, bringing together the former Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies with the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham. The new School has made tremendous progress in student recruitment, research and the creation of new degree programmes. Apart from various joint honours degree programmes with different Schools within the University, it has its own single honours BA and MA degree programmes in Contemporary Chinese Studies, Economy and Business in Contemporary China, Management for China, Global Issues and Contemporary China, and Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting.

The School also has successfully launched three new masters programmes, immediately helping our annual intake of PGT from 40 FTEs to over 100 FTEs. These new programmes include: Chinese Banking and Financial Markets, Chinese Corporate Finance and Chinese Economy and Business. A new MSci in Chinese Accounting and Financial Services will start to recruit UGT students. UGT annual intake has rocketed from 20 FTEs 4 years ago to over 100 this year. SCCS is recognised by ESRC for doctorate training, providing 2-3 full Ph.D scholarships for the school per year. SCCS's successful PhD training programme has recruited over 20 students researching different areas of contemporary China. In the 2008 RAE, SCCS was ranked number four in terms of research power in Asian Studies in the UK, with over 70% of its publications rated as world leading, international and national excellence. As it was the first time the School had entered this research exercise, it was an outstanding performance.

The number of staff members has grown from 13 in 2006 and will increase to 36 by the end of the year 2011. Over the past two years, student numbers have increased by over 150%. The School has also been awarded with a number of large external research grants amounting to more than £4.5m. SCCS has become one of the largest research and teaching centres of Chinese studies in the UK and Europe. It also hosts the prestigious China Policy Institute and the Nottingham Confucius Institute.

The new Chair will be expected to significantly strengthen the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies and candidates must have a relevant PhD and a proven record of publications in high quality research monographs and articles in top ranked journals. In addition, candidates should have significant research and field experience in China with a high level of proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, sufficient to undertake research and teaching utilising Chinese language materials and the ability to interact with colleagues in China. A record of contributing to the development of successful research grant proposals and teaching experience in relevant subjects at HE level is also essential.
