Water and Sanitation Fellow Nuru International

Nuru International’s Fellows Program is an opportunity for talented and motivated professionals to use their skills to affect real social change by working directly with communities in rural Kenya to end extreme poverty. Flights, accommodation, travel insurance and a modest living allowance will be provided; as well as a 2-week intensive training in the U.S. prior to leaving.

Job Overview

Nuru’s plan to address our partner communities’ water and sanitation needs is central to our overall, holistic solutions. The Water and Sanitation Fellow will partner with the community to identify the community’s needs in water collection, accessibility of clean drinking water, water-borne disease prevention and treatment, and education in proper human and animal waste disposal and then design sustainable solutions to meet those needs.

Specific Responsibilities

•Train and mentor the Water and Sanitation Program team
•Empower local leaders in the Water and Sanitation Program to continually take more and more ownership of the program
•Identify the water and sanitation needs within partner communities
•Develop and implement water and sanitation interventions to meet the needs in the areas of: clean drinking water; non-potable water daily use; water storage; hygiene practices; community sanitation; family sanitation; etc.
•Manage program budget efficiently to meet pre-determined goals
•Achieve pre-determined seasonal goals
•Ensure the Water and Sanitation Program is truly sustainable and scalable
•Design effective, sustainable sanitation solutions for villages and individual households
•Help to develop new monitoring tools to evaluate impact of the Water and Sanitation Program
•Refine existing program metrics to improve accuracy in its reflection of the community poverty level and operational effectiveness
Preferred Skills and Attributes

•Bachelor of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Masters preferred
Required Skills and Attributes

•At least 1 – 2 years of creating and sustaining water and sanitation solutions for the poor, specifically in marketing sanitation and hygiene products.
•Prior experience living and/or working in the Developing World
•Solid quantitative skills and experience with Excel
•High commitment to organization’s mission and theory of change
•Prior success working closely, leading and building relationships with diverse groups of people, including volunteers
•Strong work ethic
•Strong leadership and team building experience
•Ability to do crisis management and rapid, innovative problem solving in uncertain environments
