Volunteer Assistant for Programme Funding Team

Terms of Reference

CARE International is one of the world’s top humanitarian and development charities, fighting poverty and injustice. Last year we reached more than 82 million people. We worked in 87 countries, implementing long-term programmes to fight poverty, responding to humanitarian emergencies, and advocating for policy change to improve the lives of the poorest people

CARE International UK is currently recruiting a Volunteer to support the newly established Programme Funding Team. This team is part of an exciting new Unit, the Programme Funding & Management Unit, which has been tasked with substantially increasing income from institutional and trusts & foundations donors, as well as improving the quality of programme delivery on the ground.

The new Unit is comprised of two teams:
1) the Programme Funding Team - which is responsible for holding donor relationships in the UK and with the EU, as well increasing income from institutional (DfID, EU) and trusts & foundations donors.
2) the Programme Management Team – which is responsible for holding relationships with our implementing Country Offices, as well as all grant management

The post will be required to undertake research on particular pools of donors and help develop funding proposals. This role is an excellent opportunity to learn about the internal workings of a large international development charity. You will receive necessary training on donor & project research, proposal development, funding applications, donor management & prospect scoping, the information management database, Raiser’s Edge, and other key tasks required to support the team.

Typical tasks could include:-

1. Using different media, subscriptions, NGO websites and existing prospect lists, to research and compile a list of potential trusts, foundations and institutional donors that support our key areas of work.
2. Creating a list of Trustees of current and prospective Trusts and conduct research on individuals where necessary.
3. Liaising with the Programme Department to collate the necessary information to help draft funding proposals and reports for a list of current and prospective donors.
4. Drafting emergency funding proposals and reports for a select group of donors.
5. Drafting appropriate correspondence for relevant donors, including thank you and update letters.
6. Inputting relevant data into RE, as well as keep up-to-date on recording research.
7. Undertaking some basic administrative duties to support the team.

The voluntary opportunity will be for a minimum period of three months, for two to three days per week. The post is unpaid, however, we offer a lunch allowance and travel expenses from home to the office (within the Greater London area) will be reimbursed.

Voluntary roles are not a prelude to paid employment with the organisation. If opportunities for paid employment arise, these will be advertised and volunteers who apply will be considered against the same criteria as other applicants.

Requirements:

Ideally, you will have some fundraising experience and a keen interest in overseas development. You will be interested in developing your research and proposal development skills and learning more about international development and the challenges faced within the sector. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and good research and organisational skills. You will be computer literate, have a good eye for detail and be a team worker.
