UN WOMEN: REPORT WRITER

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women is working work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women is leading the coordination of the United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

UN Women's Asia and the Pacific portfolio covers a diverse range of countries, varying in degrees of socio-economic, political and environmental challenges and opportunities. It is essential to develop corporate level understanding of UN Women's presence, scope of programming and partnerships in the Asia and the Pacific region. To support UN Women's global advocacy efforts and partnership development, it is necessary to have a harmonized, country-level and programme-level analysis prepared and readily available. This analysis will support the development of baselines as part of the roll out of the global Strategic Plan in the Asia and the Pacific Region.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Asia & the Pacific Section Chief and the day-to-day supervision of the Programme Specialists, the consultant will be required to do the following tasks:

  • Develop a generic, country-level brief format; and programme brief format, for review and approval by the Programme Support Unit and UN Women sub-regional offices in Asia and the Pacific;
  • In cooperation with the A/P Section and relevant country-level/sub-regional level offices, compile country level briefing notes, which reflect latest nationally available and internationally generated socio-economic, political and gender analysis of the country, as it relates to UN Women's work;
  • Compile factsheets and other analysis on national and regional programmes, country presence and sub-regional country presence (including scope of portfolio, operational presence and status);
  • Provide analysis of donor trends in the region including scoping of widening of donor group;
  • Support the section to develop a system to ensure these three levels of analysis are regularly updated.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Masters Degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, or Development.

Experience:

  • Two to three years experience in research and analysis; experience in development and in the Asia and the Pacific region considered an asset;
  • Prior experience in programme/ project management and gender analysis will be an added asset;
  • Demonstrated experience in report writing and analytical writing.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English (written and oral);
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact.
