PROGRAM BACKGROUND

In partnership with the Ministry of Health of the Libyan National Transitional Council, International Medical Corps will strengthen existing rehabilitation services in Benghazi and Misurata, to provide urgently needed rehabilitation for persons with disabilities

Purpose of the position: The primary responsibility of the Rehabilitation Psychologist will be to provide psychosocial support to war wounded patients in Benghazi Medical Center through training and supervising national staff.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Rehabilitation Psychologist will assure the implementation of the following through training and supervising the national rehabilitation psychologist and social worker:

1-Complete comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments for all patients receiving physiotherapy treatment in the rehabilitation center. Assessment will account for the range of physical, personal, psychosocial, cognitive, and behavioral factors that may be affected, such as neuro-cognitive status, sensory difficulties, mood/emotions, desired level of independence and interdependence, mobility/freedom of movement, self-esteem and self-determination, behavioral control and coping skills, subjective view of capabilities and quality of life

2- Provide effective treatment and community based interventions according to the presenting problems identified by patients and in line with principles of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR). This may include: • Pain management • Pre and post operation support • Evidence based interventions for common mental disorders (e.g. PTSD, Depression, Anxiety) • Aiding clients in living and working in their own communities to the greatest extent possible • Facilitating social inclusion and access to opportunities for clients • Relaxation techniques • Stress management techniques. • Relapse prevention for treatment of addictions

3- Support patients, their family members, and other significant people in the individual's social/community circle (e.g. teachers, employers, co-workers, religious leaders, and friends) through psychoeducation, community support services, and advocacy.

4- Assist in the implementation of confidential documentation of treatment records (e.g. patient history, intake, assessment, progress notes)

5- Undertake efficient and effective role to facilitate the implementation of activities, and to create a harmonized conducive work environment within the hospital, and with all relevant partners with ensured compliance with IMC rules and regulations.

6- Assist in the facilitation of regular supervision and training sessions provided by the IMC MHPSS team.

7- Collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to provide wrap-around support for each patient including weekly team meetings, treatment planning, and team consultation.

8- Establish supportive patient networks, including peer-to-peer support, and group psychoeducation and therapy.

9- Provide effective discharge planning and follow-up support for patients of the Rehab Center.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

• MA degree in Psychology, Social work, or a relevant degree • Clinical rehabilitation psychotherapy work experience in the public or private sector. • Demonstrated ability to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary settings including but not limited to considering influences of culture, ethnicity, language, gender, age, developmental level, sexual orientation, social network, residence and geographic location, socioeconomic status, and relative visibility and/or assumption of disability on attitudes and available services. • Extensive knowledge on public mental health approach and prevention/promotion treatment and rehabilitation models in MHPSS. • Personal qualities include a sense of initiative, strong work ethics, very good communication skills, self-confidence and commitment to humanitarian issues.
• Languages: Fluency in oral and written English, and preferably Arabic as well. • Computer skills: Proficiency in current office software applications.

LANGUAGES

  • Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret, technical and non-technical in the English language.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers in the field and HQ, counterparts, senior government and political leaders and other related regional players
  • Ability to speak Arabic and English a must
