Economist Ofcom

Ofcom is the communications regulator. We regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms and mobiles, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. We make sure that people in the UK get the best from their communications services, while ensuring that competition can thrive.

We are now seeking high quality candidates for a range of positions.

In one of these roles, you will advise on economic issues across the full range of our activities, including regulatory policy, compliance and investigations, in the telecoms, postal and broadcasting sectors, and in management of the radio spectrum. You will identify and apply the relevant economic framework to address a range of regulatory and competition issues across the markets we regulate, and will help to create and maintain Ofcom’s status as a centre of excellence for the economic analysis of communications and postal markets.

Opportunities will exist within either the Competition Economists team or the Chief Economist’s team: Including leading projects on innovative economic thinking for inclusion into future Ofcom projects and ensuring consistency in how economics is used across the organisation.

An economics graduate, preferably with a Master’s, you will be academically accomplished in microeconomics and/or industrial organisation. However, your technical and intuitive understanding of microeconomics (including industrial organisation, competition economics and regulatory economics) must be matched by the ability to apply it to complex real world situations. As such you will have experience as an economist, preferably in regulation or competition.

Relevant industry knowledge and experience in the communications or postal sectors would be an advantage, as would experience of spreadsheet-based modelling and an understanding of corporate finance and basic accounting.

A good team-worker, effective relationship-builder and clear communicator, both orally and in writing, you will have the skills to define the scope of work streams, identify the resources required, manage project processes and outputs, and provide guidance, support and feedback to colleagues.

Ofcom offers competitive salaries plus pensions and flexible benefits packages.

To apply, write stating your suitability for the role and current salary, enclosing a CV, to applications@ofcom.org.uk or by post to: The HR Department, Ofcom, Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road, London SE1 9HA

Ofcom is an equal opportunities employer. It wishes to reflect the diversity of contemporary UK society and is therefore actively seeking to recruit colleagues from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds as well as those who have a disability.
