Job Purpose:

Join economic research teams preparing macroeconomic analytical work on policy-relevant issues of strategic interest to Asian Development Bank (ADB) and its member countries. Undertake collaborative empirical research on international trade with specialists within ADB and with external researchers. Contribute substantially to the preparation and dissemination of research outputs and publications, including ADB's flagship publication, the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) and its Update. Work with broad policies and objectives, working directly with clients, with supervision for unfamiliar or critical tasks.

Expected Outcomes:

Economic Research Work
- Pursue a research agenda in international trade, with an emphasis on econometric studies with policy-relevant implications.
- Provide analytical support in the areas of research expertise.
- Participate in teams preparing the ADO and its Update.
- Work independently and in research teams to produce high-quality research papers.
- Support Management dialogue with ADB clients on the policy implications of ERD's research work.

Knowledge Management
- Undertake collaborative research with specialists in a global network of knowledge institutions and within other ADB knowledge departments.
- Contribute to the dissemination of the ADO and its Update.
- Participate in and contribute to relevant internal and external training and conferences and other activities for advocacy, dissemination and knowledge building.

Staff Supervision
- Provide leadership and support to reporting staff.
- Supervise the performance of reporting staff, providing clear direction and regular monitoring and feedback on performance.
- Ensure the on-going learning and development of reporting staff.

Educational Requirements:

  • Master's Degree, or equivalent, in Economics or related fields. University degree in Economics, combined with specialized experience in similar organization/s, may be considered in lieu of a Master's degree.

Relevant Experience And Other Requirements:

- At least 8 years of relevant professional experience in economic research.
- Evidence of high quality research output and track record of high quality publications in international peer-reviewed professional journals, preferably in the field of empirical research on international trade.
- Strong quantitative, analytical, and conceptual skills in economics.
- Familiarity with international trade databases and the management of large trade datasets.
- Demonstrated expertise in economic research and development in developing countries.
- Good understanding of ADB's institutional context, strategies, priorities, and objectives.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Good interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of ADB stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams.
- International experience working in several countries
